Great Barrington, MA – Southern Berkshire home opener was spoiled by a strong lanesborough/Pittsfield Saints team 22 to 8. Ther Chargers Cooper Bunce was able to force a fumble o da long run by the Saints quarterback, Sean Fenig was able to recover the fumble at the chargers own 4-yard line. After a 3 an out, the Saints took over at the Chargers 38-yard line and scored on their third play, Noah Inthirath was able to make the play on the two-point conversation making it 6-0 Saints. The Chargers threatened on the next, but the drive stalled at the Saints 35. The Saints took the ball and scored on 6 plays making it 14-0. After the Chargers turned over the ball on the ensuing kickoff, the defense was able to stiffen and get a turnover on downs, keeping the score 14-0 heading into the half.
To open the second half, Cooper Bunce hit Sean Fenig on a 37-yard reception, John Ireland then took a handoff 20 yards down to the 4-yard line. The chargers then had 2 false starts and a run for loss. On the next play Bunce was intercepted and the ball was returned for a TD, the saints added the two-point conversation pushing the score to 22-0. The Chargers were able to get on the board the next possession when Mateo Buffoni took a handoff 55 yards for the score. Bunce was able to hit Fenig for the 2-point conversation. The Chargers had life when Johnny Ireland intercepted a Saints pass and returned it to mid field. However, the chargers could not convert the turnover into points.
Defensive stars included Ireland with 4 solo tackles, 2 assisted, a forced fumble, and an INT, Bunce ended with 4 tackles a forced fumble and a solid 35-yard punt, and Noah Inthirath had a nice game with 3 solo tackles, 1 assisted, and a fumble recovery.
Offensive stars included Buffoni who ended with 70 yards on 5 carries and a TD, Ireland added 37 yards on the ground, Fenig with a reception for 35 yards, McKnight with 2 receptions for 10 yards and Bunce ended the day 4-8 passing with 46 yards and an INT.
The Junior Chargers will be back in action next week against the Lee Wildcats in Lee, 1PM start.
